Once again Dursley pool played host to it’s annual indoor triathlon
on November 22nd. This year though was to be a bit different, as invites
had gone out to members of the cross-training fraternity and the stronghold
of the local Future Fitness boys would face a challenge of immense proportions.
Early on in the afternoon, Teagan and Jordan Parsons had already taken
two silver medals in the mini 6-8years and 9-11years respectively. Jordan
just missing top spot by one second! Bertie Vidgen (Rich’s lad)
had originally entered as a senior (16+yrs), but eventually decided
to enter the Junior comp 12-16yrs (he is 12) and did himself proud and
only just missed a top three finish.
Next up were the ladies and late entry Kim Harvey vs Michelle Parsons.
Kim went well in the swim, posting the fastest ladies swim of the day
and although struggled a little on the bike and row sections due to
her small stature, did really well to take a silver behind the inevitable
winner Michelle Parsons. Michelle has of course competed in triathlons
all year and finished ranked top of the ladies British duathlon series,
so it was no surprise that she matched the guys on the bike and finished
with a fabulous sub 8 minute row to take top spot!
A neck and neck race between Simon French and Richard Vidgen was probably
one of the reasons Richard pushed himself on so hard and although he
finished a few seconds behind Simon, it was more than good enough to
take the top spot in the mens 40+ age group. Simon had obviously improved
his swim somewhat with a split just 10 seconds slower than Rich and
with a pretty even bike split, it was always going to be down to the
row. Simon being the better rower, slowly clawed back the time and eventually
posted the 5th fastest row split of the day to take 6th overall in the
mens senior category.
The next heat saw the race of the day between Will Whitmore, Adam Horder
and Phil Parsons. Predictably Phil led by some way after the swim and
with a good bike section afterwards, could the lightweight rower hang
on to top spot?
There was only 11 seconds separating Will and Adam after the swim and
they seemed to be having their own private battle. Sure enough, Phil
hung on to the lead with a sub 6min 50sec row as the other two battled
hard to the finish. With a World cup loss in the rugby earlier that
day, it seemed that the Aussie would have to settle for losing this
comp’ too and although Adam posted a 6min 55secs row, it was no
match for Will’s amazing 6min 40secs.
The next heat saw Roscoe Nash compete alone and after a slight goggle
filling error on the first length of the swim, he eventually completed
that section in a respectable 3mins 1sec. I seemed that everyone posted
similar splits on the bike and that only cadence was an issue, even
if that meant just a few seconds gain. With the second fastest row of
the day, Roscoe managed to equal the time of Adam set in the previous
heat and so take joint third.
Last to go, in what seemed like the middle of the night was me. Knowing
that a tail end row of probably 40 seconds slower than Will and the
rest was likely, I knew I needed a pretty quick swim as the bikes splits
looked like they would be similar. Unfortunately, the years swimming
at 500m, 750m and 1900m pace didn’t help and so neither did a
2mins 24secs split on this occasion. That combined with a complete ‘blow
up’ on the row was to relegate me to 5th this year.
It was a good day's racing and everyone seemed to enjoy it. Well done
to all who competed and hopefully, if they hold the event again next
year, we can take another host of top places.
