Results
Saturday 29th March saw the venue of Fitness First near Luton play
host to the third annual Box-fit cross-training competition. The mens
open event had been pre-billed on the xtrain forum, as a battle between
2001 Champion Lee Rankin, 2002 Champion Adam Horder, Cassius Francson
(Calso 7’s runner up) and ‘Mr Cross-training’ Hywel
Davies, who had not lost an individual event for several years.
There were many fantastic battles in this two-lane competition throughout
the day, in both the intermediate category and open events respectively.
In fact, judging by some of the top times in the intermediate races,
there may well be a few more entries for the open course next time round.
There was an awesomely close race in the ladies intermediate comp, which
was eventually separated by just one second. Agonisingly close for Lesley
Glock who just missed out to Donna Smith who posted a lightening quick
14min 41secs to win.
Although not quite as close, the mens intermediate event was taken
by Dave Marshall in 12mins 33secs. Geoff Wiseman Jr took a well earned
second spot (in his first ever comp?) with 13mins flat and Nick Randle
snuck a third place with 14min 16secs. Special mention to our friend
Kriss Hutt, who took a 10th place finish in his first year of competition.
Carmel Bassett did fantastically well to take her first victory at
this level in the Masters category. She was followed closely by Sue
Regan and Christine Gammage who placed 2nd and 3rd respectively. The
mens Masters saw Paul Cooper dominate with a new record time of 17mins
47secs to win from Andy Laidlaw and Ivor Johnston who posted times of
18mins 59secs and 19mins 2secs respectively.
The ladies Open event category saw Becky Ceil once again show her dominance
when the likes of Michelle Parsons and Lisa Cox are not competing. Philippa
Armatage did well to get within 35 secs of Becky’s finishing time,
though, and Dawn Ratchford wrapped up third spot one and a half minutes
later.
An outstanding performance from Cassius Francson in the penultimate
heat of the mens open saw him post by far the fastest time of the day
so far with 15mins 56secs. That really put a ‘spanner in the works’
and with Lee just 16secs behind, both guys would have to play the waiting
game as Hywel battled away with Adam Horder in the last heat. Adam seemed
to have a bit of a hard time of it and slowly fell further behind the
Welshman, who also seemed to struggle himself on the treadmill (probably
due to the heat and lack of oxygen in the room). The usual scenes followed
after a such a short intense event which saw Hywel finish and fall to
the ground in ‘a world of pain’ (as was everyone else) and
Cassius looked over to his team mates watching and gave a shrug of his
shoulders and a second place grin, but it was close, with just 19seconds
separating the top two.
