OneOnOne Iron
Man Crosstraining Competition
Worcester, 26
January 2003
A good day's competition with a few new faces putting in an appearance.
The two lane format worked really well and there was a decent crowd
supporting the competitors throughout the day. Nice to see the likes
of Ade Clift and Martyn Evans making a return to the x-training scene
after their prolonged absences. Ade will also be holding a special seminar
in the upcoming weeks on exercise techniques used in competition with
special focus on alternate squat thrusts and the definition of locked
arms!!! (only kidding mate!).
Steve Watts was in fine form and raced down the course in a great battle
with Gary Nicholas, eventually just getting ahead of him to post the
only sub 26 min time of the day so far. Those of you who follow the
indoor rowing scene may be aware of the name Chris Rushton. Chris is
a part of the infamous Royces Gym team, the guys who pushed Leander
Rowing Club (James Cracknell, and Matt Pinsent to name but a few!) all
the way in the 100,000m team challenge last year. Chris is no slouch
on the rower at all, having been one of the first non-rowers to go under
6 minutes for 2000m. However he'd never tried his hand at a x-training
competition before Worcester.
Seems he could be one to watch though as he flew down the course and
took the top spot in the open age category with a time just over 26
minutes. Not bad for a newcomer but would it beat Mr Rankin?!? With
time ticking on, Stuart Leng went down the course and finished in a
respectable time of 31 minutes to take 3rd place in the Masters category.
Just before 3pm the Slough boys (plus Nik and Roscoe!) arrived on the
scene and, true to their word, got ready to tackle the course having
already raced at Tough Guy earlier in the day!
Lee Rankin, Phil McConnell, Donnie Ellis, Roscoe Nash and Nik Kandola
had all hurtled back down the M5 to Worcester to race in the Ironman
late in the afternoon. Despite numerous cuts and bruises, all posted
fantastic times with Lee putting in a blistering performance to take
the Mens Open title from Chris Rushton and the fastest overall time
of the day! You dread to think what time he would have put in if he'd
not
done Tough Guy!!
A good start to 2003 for the x-training calendar and well supported
by regulars and newcomers alike. Thanks to Stuart Leng and his staff
for hosting it, Michelle and Phil Parsons for helping with the judging,
and to all those who took part in it. See you at Calso on 1st March.
