Boxfit Crosstraining Competition

Luton, 9 March 2002

Firstly, what a great competition! See competitor times.

Adam Horder, winner of 9 March Boxfit, proving that CrossTraining can be fun. See mpeg video (921k - it will take a while)

Great for several reasons, the organisation was terrific and Dave Coard together with Stuart Leng and the rest of the Box-fit crew from Fitness First, should be chuffed to bits with the way the day's competition ran. Also, the day's racing provided a great atmosphere and some really exciting battles in both the mens and ladies events respectively.

The younger dangerous brother, Ceri Whitmore, just gets pipped by brother Will

Many of the finalists from previous X-Zone and Ultra-fit competitions were in attendance and the last few heats of both the men's and ladies open competition were very hotly contested.

We (Team Future Fitness) had no competitors in the short course event this year and so I had a bit of a 'lie in' and so missed watching most of the short course. Looking at the times posted though, most were similar to last year's (mid 14mins), with the exeption of the mens and ladies winners who posted exceptionally fast times of just over 12mins. The mens short course event was won by Nik Kandola. Nik being one of the very few to make it to the end phase of the BBC programme "SAS are you tough enough?"

As far as the open events were concerned, the heat between Rebecca Ceil and last year's winner, Michelle Parsons was pre-billed to be the race of the day as far as the ladies were concerned. Lisa Cox soon put a spanner in the works though, by posting a blisteringly hot time of 18mins - this of course now meant that it was going to be even more interesting, as not only were Becky and Michelle racing one another, but were also chasing Lisa's time from two heats previous.

From a spectator's point of view, it was a great battle between the two girls. I was actually stood directly in front of Rebecca on the runner and although obviously in a great deal of pain from the efforts of the previous nine excersises, she hung really tough on the treadmill to beat Michelle for the first time. Michelle had unfortunately been suffering with illness and I don't recall seeing her walk so much on the treadmill, but she battled on bravely to eventually finish in fourth place.
A finalist at last years Ultra-fit, Lisa has obviously made some great improvements in her training programme and proved to be the class act on the day winning by nearly two minutes.

Ladies Open winners: Becky Ceil, Lisa Cox, and Gill Watson

The mens event proved to be just as exciting and once again the pre-billed square off between Ausie Adam Hoarder and last years winner Lee Rankin was thought to be the race of the day. Adam actually travelled to our Gym in Gloucestershire a few weeks ago to train with Lee and Phil McConnell and it was quite interesting watching them try to out chin, bench, shoulder press, cycle, row and run one another.

At the mid stage of the mens event, the fastest time posted was still only in the mid 22mins and we all assumed that perhaps it was a slower course this year because of the strict (but fair) judging. At one point I did think that I shouldn't have had that second glass of red the night before, as I thought I was seeing double.

Mens Winners: Carl Turrito, Lee Rankin, and Adam Horder

It actually turned out to be identical twin brothers Jamie and Darren Farr. The boys
both posted very respectable times of just over 21mins and 20mins 27secs respectively.

It wasn't until we got to the last few heats that we saw the 20 minute barrier broken by 'Dangerous Brother' Will Whitmore. Will just managed to pip his brother Ceri and I thought it was a nice touch that Dave Coard had arranged for both Will and Ceri to race one another. Phil Talbot was looking very lean and mean after doing a lot more rowing recently and the Ultra-fit Champion soon put some respectability into the Masters category with an impressive time of around 18 mins. It wasn't quite good enough on this occasion though, as Andrew Laidlaw posted a time of a few seconds quicker than Phil to win the event. Again, Andrew is another guy who has made some great improvements over the past two years.

There was a little guy called Carl Turrito who impressed me last year at both the Ultra-fit, where he only just missed the final and at the Tropicana Champs where he place equal 5th with Phil McConnell. I can only assume that Carl must come from a triathlon or cycling background (judging by the kit he wears) and it was going to be interesting to see if his success of last year would continue. Sure enough, Carl posted the first sub 18 mins time of the day with 17mins 57secs, a time which turned out to be good enough for third spot over all. Our boy Phil had a great battle with 'new comer' Gary Nicholas and they pushed each other all the way, Gary just winning that race by a few seconds and the boys eventually picked up fourth and fifth respectively.

And so to the last heat of the day between Adam and Lee. Having to Play catch up from as early as the shoulder press, Lee unfortunately never got on terms with Adam who 'flew' down the course. A very strong guy is Adam and he had nearly a full minute's lead at the runner, by which time Lee pretty much knew it was all over. Never one to give up though, Lee 'dug in' on the treadmill and picked up a very respectable second place with just over 17mins. So it was to be a reversal of last years Tropicana result, with Adam turning the tables and taking the title in a new Championship record time of 16mins 40secs. Well done guys, Hell of a race!!

In the team event, although fast and furious as always. There was only going to be one winner, netfit. A team comprised of the mens open winner (who we are now calling Adam 'Sheila' Hoarder by virtue of the fact that he did his section of the event wearing a skirt and red wig, proving that this cross-training lark can also be a bit of fun) Lee Rankin and top female cross-trainer Christine Tooze. To be fair, Netfit
were pushed all the way by Michelle Parsons, Andy Watson and Leandro Natale who placed a relatively close second. .

My thoughts:
An excellent competition! Easily comparable to Tropicana, if not better. Very well organised and judged. A nice venue, even though it took us about two and a half hours to get there. Could be comparable to Ultra-fit, if a few more of the top guy and girls attend the next one.
Well done to all that competed!!!!!!!!
